Geologic Abstract Painting, Mixed Media Art "Black Gold" by Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Black Gold" 10x8 inches, by Carol Nelson

This is a demo painting I did in a recent Geologic Abstract workshop. The black section is Carbon Black acrylic paint, Micaceous Iron Oxide paint, and white.

I covered it with a layer of Liquitex Pouring Medium for a very shiny finish. I'm always excited by the juxtaposition of shiny and dull passages.

Metals and Mixed Media Contemporary Abstract, "Metalworks" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Metalworks" 10x10 by Carol Nelson

I had to do this painting as an example for my Metals and Mixed Media class next week in Phoenix. It has aluminum wire pounded into a random design, and some metal washers, in the central goldish stripe. These were covered with aluminum foil pressed around each object, and then antiqued with Golden High Flow Sepia. I love that paint for antiquing.

The orange foil was embossed with a swirl design before painting with Golden Fluids: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold and Transparent Red Oxide.

There is also some uncolored aluminum foil that was antiqued with Golden Fluid Carbon Black. The two fancy patterned papers were purchased at an art supply store.

Mixed media geologic abstract, "Marble Palisade II" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Marble Palisade II", 12x9 inches, by Carol Nelson

This painting, measuring 12x9 inches, is a small version of a 36x36 inch painting I did a few years ago. The "marble" formations have a slight amount of iridescent pearl paint that gives them a glow when the lighting is right.

Iridescent Pearl (Fine) is one of Golden's line of iridescent colors. I use the fluid acrylic version. I find they are excellent for adding a bit of shimmer to other colors. It's easy to overdo shimmer or shine, but that is harder to do with these paints because they are also quite transparent.

Mixed media geologic abstract, "Hidden Passage" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Geologic Abstract, "Hidden Passage" by Carol Nelson
This heavily textured painting on wood panel was a demo for my recent Geologic Abstracts workshop held in my Colorado studio. There are actual small pebbles imbedded in the painting. The predominant palette is warm sienna and red oxide tones, but there are areas with cool-toned highlights of blue, green and turquoise.

Faux Batik Painting, "Autumn Glow" by Colorado Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson

"Autumn Glow," faux batik painting by Carol Nelson

This painting was a demo for a faux batik class I taught recently.
If you look carefully, you can see random lines in green, ochre, and turquoise that result from the batik process.

In this example, the painting is done on fabric, the processed with wax, paint, and polymer medium for a unique look. I love the unpredictability of this process.
